Initially attracting attention for featuring in its ranks guitar wizards Mick Barr (Ocrilim, Orthrelm, etc.) and Colin Marston (Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, Behold... The Arctopus, Byla, etc.), Krallice surpassed their reputation as a "side-project band" with the release of their unique 2008 self-titled debut. Black metal at its core while also incorporating progressive tinges and references to its members' other works, the album caused a sensation in the scene, landing on "Year-End Best Of" lists in many major metal publications and media outlets like Decibel, Terrorizer, and Pitckfork. It even inexplicably seeped over into the mainstream consciousness: SPIN Magazine placed Krallice in their "Top 5 Metal Bands You Should Know," and singer/songwriter Ryan Adams gave them the number two spot on his Best Albums of 2008 list (alongside Metallica, Coldplay, and Mariah Carey!). In the meantime, the band honed their guitar gymnastics on the live front, touring with the likes of Wolves in the Throne Room. Krallice's much-anticipated sophomore album offers the intensity of its predecessor, multiplied tenfold. A transcendental experience, Dimensional Bleedthrough is a surging 77-minute epic where insane counterpoint rhythms battle it out with melancholic, layered melodies under a progressive, blackened shroud. Adding more of everything, Krallice pummels the listener into submission with their overwhelming musicality and skill. Dimensional Bleedthrough is the album that will solidify Krallice's position as one of the most important bands in metal today.

    Lon Gisland

    Pompeii

The sleeper hit of 2006, Beirut's Gulag Orkestar came out of nowhere to sell tens of thousands of copies in a matter of months and wound up on countless critics' year-end lists. As a stopgap before recording a new full-length in Fall 2007--and as a way to capture some current songs being performed at shows--the eight-member band checked into Sea Side Studios in Brooklyn to record Lon Gisland.

    Cloud Seed

    Planet Mu

Vex'd are a legendary duo. Their 2005 album Degenerate was one of the first and most successful dubstep long-players, and remains to this day one of the most respected. By incorporating techstep, jungle, breaks and apocalyptic noir influences into the classic "bass and drums and 140 BPM" format, Degenerate was integral in establishing the template for today's dubstep sound, pushing it beyond its roots in two-step and UK garage.

  • Galaxie 500

    Today (+ Uncollected)

    20|20|20

When Galaxie 500's Today was released in 1988, it set off a chain reaction of quiet explosions still being felt. Never before had a record so emphasized the calming elements of rock music, transforming what at first seems like a collection of bridges into fully realized songs. And one can draw a straight line from here to the many groups they influenced, like Low, Belle & Sebastian, and Bon Iver.

The title is an intentionally declarative statement. After being labeled masters of the disengaged and forlorn, Damon Krukowsi, Dean Wareham, and Naomi Yang delivered a full-length comprised of their most stately material.
